CALL TO ACTION: Confronting the issue of injustice
By Chato Olivas-Gallo, CEO, CSW Hong Kong
DO JUSTICE Conference, 28 June 2008

Christians must be at the forefront of the battle against injustice because we are image-bearers of God, the author of justice. Being an image-bearer of God means enjoying human dignity, freedom of speech and thought, and the ability to be God’s co-manager of His creation. But it is not enough to sit back and enjoy this knowledge, because being an image-bearer of God means much, much more than that. As image-bearers of God, we must feel what He feels, our hearts must rejoice over what makes God rejoice, and break over what breaks the heart of God. We must feel and express his heart for justice, and his anger at injustice. As God’s image-bearer, we cannot and must not sit by and watch while people suffer. (more)

GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IN BURMA
By Cheery Zahau, Coordinator, Women’s League of Chinland

I left for India when I was 17 years old because I didn’t feel safe in my own country as I belong to a Chin ethnic group and I am a woman. I experienced how horrible the military soldiers are to women, ethnic women in particular just because we have different languages, cultures and religions. After coming to Mizoram State, India, I could learn my own language and learn the true history of my own country. I could help the Chin women and children by volunteering at their organizations. Here I first heard the terms, human rights, parliament, gender equality etc, which I never learnt in Burma. At the same time, I studied science subjects to become a mining engineer. But this dream faded away when the forced deportation of Burmese people happened in Mizoram from July-October 2003. I had to campaign that the Burmese people would face persecution from the Burmese military army if they were pushed back. Then, I became a human rights activist. (more)

FEEDBACK ABOUT THE 2008 DO JUSTICE CONFERENCE

This conference was a personal experience for me. I especially loved the communion on 26th June - at the very least, it was an amazing visual symbol of what CSW is doing and an incredible encouragement for everyone to take part. I think that if we continue returning to God’s original vision of the church - many parts, working together, loving each other as we are loved, we see that it is God’s very heart for Christians not only to focus on their relationship with God but on their relationship to each other. It was God after all that pointed out that we (Christians) would be known by our love for each other. - Agatha Villa, Church of God HK

Great but pleasant surprise to see there are organisations looking into violence against women. Seems it is a forgotten “oversight” all along, but is being remedied now by some very brave women, PTL. After all God made us all equal. - Sophie Mark

I have been to most of the CSW HK conferences and this one was the best ever. - Robert Allender, St. Andrew’s Church

The worship time on Thursday and Saturday united us, and glorified God. The Saturday talks were inspiring especially when Mervyn Thomas shared. - Jeff Brice

The conference was again very good and very moving. - Kathrin Wohrle

I feel more compelled to “shout out” the Do Justice mandate! - Helen M.
