Activities

Prayer is the beginning, middle and end of what we do in Christian Solidarity Worldwide. We believe that prayer changes things. We also engage in awareness-raising campaigns and lobbying as our way of speaking up for the voiceless, and we provide aid and encouragement to the needy.

Here are the highlights of our activities:

URGENT ACTIONS

We called for urgent actions such as prayer and letter-writing on the following events and incidents:

  1. Justice for victims of rape and sexual violence in Burma
  2. Burma migrants and refugees who died in an airtight seafood truck while being smuggled into Phuket, Thailand
  3. Stop unjust and inhuman arrests and detention of Burma refugees in Malaysia
  4. Call to join a candlelight vigil for Burma’s Cyclone Nargis victims
  5. Call to join a 24-hour prayer chain for victims of Cyclone Nargis, and for referendum day in Burma
  6. Demand for humane treatment for Burma refugees in Malaysia
  7. Statement on the tragic killing of Padoh Mahn Sha, General Secretary of the Karen National Union
  8. Demand for release of Yoo Sang Joon tried in China on 26 November 07
  9. Call to join a candlelight vigil at Chater Garden, Hong Kong, to protest and pray on behalf of Burma
  10. Advocacy postcards stating “Refugees are human. Please respect them” addressed to the Malaysian Prime Minister calling upon the government to observe the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and Convention on Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). More than 200 postcards were signed by participants at CSW HK’s November 2007 conference and personally delivered to Malaysia by a CSW HK volunteer.
  11. Advocacy postcards stating “Freedom for Burma” calling upon the Burma government to release all prisoners of conscience, and to restore freedom and democracy
  12. Justice for North Korea advocacy postcards addressed to the United Nations Secretary General calling for decisive action upon the human rights tragedy in North Korea
  13. Petition to urge UN Security Council to impose universal arms embargo upon Burma; petition to release all political prisoners in Burma (28 Sept. 08)

PRAYER AND AWARENESS-RAISING ACTIVITIES

  1. Candlelight vigil at Chater Garden to pray for and support the cause of the Saffron Revolution seeking justice, peace and democracy in Burma
  2. Participated in “Knowing Burma” event of HK Women’s Christian Council
  3. Candlelight vigil on 9 March 08, Global Day of Prayer for Burma
  4. Joined HK Coalition for a Free Burma in submitting petition to the Myanmar Consulate in Hong Kong calling for justice and freedom for women in Burma
  5. Candlelight vigil at Kowloon Union Church to pray for victims of Cyclone Nargis and raise awareness about the lack of appropriate response by the Burma government
  6. 24-hour prayer chain among believers from HK churches re Cyclone Nargis and the constitutional referendum in Burma (10 May 08)
  7. Together with The Vine Christian Fellowship, co-organized three-day DO JUSTICE conference featuring Cheery Zahau of the Women’s League of Chinland, Burma; Joseph D’Souza of All India Christian Council; Mervyn Thomas of CSW United Kingdom (26 to 28 June 08)
  8. Solidarity trip to Bamboo School (4 to 9 August 08)
  9. Evening of prayer for North Korea with screening of Seoul Train documentary (25 June 07)
  10. Participated in Let Morning Shine, an evening of art and music for the people of North Korea by providing resources, books and information about North Korea
  11. Highlighted North Korea during the 2007 Human Rights Day Carnival in Mongkok, Kowloon, HK SAR
  12. Speak Up for Justice conference featuring Tim Peters of Helping Hands Korea and Catherine Riley Byran of Bamboo School on the Thai-Burma border (9 and 10 November 07)
  13. Talk about the continuing human rights tragedy in North Korea featuring Tim Peters of Helping Hands Korea and Christian Whiton, US Deputy Special Envoy for Human Rights in NK (12 November 07)
  14. Prayer chain for China on the opening day of the 2008 Summer Olympics
  15. Participated in activities to mark the 20th Anniversary of Burma’s pro-democracy uprising known as 8888
  16. Supported and publicized the Worldwide Day of Fasting and Prayer for North Korea on 27 July 08
